Posterazzi understands. It’s October… which means two things:  World Series and scary movies.  Some may react immediately to that and say a World Series with the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals  is like a horror movie.  Some may liken it to science fiction. Yet others, like the Yankees fan we are, feel this World Series is like the big silence in outer space.  Because in space, no one can hear you scream.

5. Mimic (1997)
This movie brings home several scary concepts: genetic engineering gone wrong, humans as the hunted, New York City (which is scary in itself) and Cockroaches.  The concept is simple. Cockroaches have been spreading a virus that is killing children.  Scientists create a “bug” that looks like half termite and half praying mantis to eradicate the diseased cockroaches and unleash it into the sewers of New York.  Lo and behold, the new species evolve quickly, learn to mimic other species and begin hunting humans. Big kudos to scary sewer scenes and Mira Sorvino in a movie that STILL makes me look twice at bugs on the wall.

4. The Fly (1986)
Be afraid. Be very afraid. This David Croenenberg film is a remake of a classic 1958 story, where scientists falls in love, tries to impress a girl, things go tragically wrong and much horror ensues.  Starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, Croenenberg’s version is actually a tragic love story.  The scary part of this movie is brought to life by the performance of Jeff Goldblum.  While his appearance transforms into the self named Brundlefly, Goldblum’s character slowly loses his humanity and the animalistic qualities take over.

3. The Thing (1986)
Nothing says scary like a parasitic extraterrestrial life form able to turn into other life forms, paranoia and an Antarctic research station. Kurt Russell stars in this John Carpenter movie that has become a cult classic. Roger Ebert said of the film,  “among the most elaborate, nauseating, and horrifying sights yet achieved by Hollywood’s new generation of visual magicians”, and called the film itself “a great barf-bag movie”.  Reviews were tough for the year it came out, since it was competing with E.T. for top billing for space creature movies.  Guess the viewing public preferred to see their aliens as cuddly Reeses Pieces eaters rather than horrific people eaters. Wonder how the new one will fair.

2. Event Horizon (1997)
This film has something for everyone. Sci fi, fantasy, horror stemming from vast seclusion, technology, hallucinations, mental insanity and more.  With fantastic acting couple with a top notch plot, this movie will scare the heck out of you.  When it was first released, it was dubbed “The Shining… in Space” and that is not far off.  A piece of advice when watching this movie, however.  Watch it uninterrupted.  This movie has done better on video than it did in on the big screen.  The concepts and pace are a little tough, unless you can watch it over and over again.

1. Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott directed what many call the greatest sci fi horror of all time.  It stands the test of time. It also contains all the elements that make a great science fiction horror movie: ship stranded far from home, “alien” seemingly hunting the crew, twists and turns that bring out a strong no nonsense character to save the day (Ripley – played by Sigourney Weaver) and special effects good enough to win an Academy Award.  Alien draws on the emotion felt from being stranded in a pace so large, there is very little chance of escape. It starts with the tag line for this movie: In space, no one can hear you scream.
